SHADOWINGS
An exhibition of new work by Gabrielle Adamik and Cinnamon Lee
While it is presumed that the object comes first and its shadow follows, in SHADOWINGS, Gabrielle Adamik and Cinnamon Lee reconsider materials that reinforce this certainty, in order to let that certainty loosen.
Glass and metal are materials that are inherently solid - cold, dense, and knowing their own edges - however cast under particular light, solid objects can appear less as things in themselves than a pretext for the shadow they throw. In this way the shadow stops illustrating, it authors.
Working with light while focusing on its deliberate withholding, for both artists the interest is not shadow as absence, nor as a void waiting to be filled by light. It is shadow as a rival ontology. Where the object suggests, the shadow insists. SHADOWINGS proposes that this is not a deficiency but a different order of reality altogether, one our habits of looking have simply trained us to overlook. It asks viewers to sit inside that uncertainty rather than resolve it.
